Earth day was a few days ago and it got me thinking about sustainability. It seems like everyday more and more couples are deciding to go green for their big day. From the food to flowers, environmentally friendly options are popping up everywhere.

Whether you’re a “green warrior” or simply want to be less wasteful, there a lot of easy ways to be sustainably mindful throughout your planning process. Check out some tips on how you can go green below!

Alvina Valenta Dress available at Sabrina Ann

Consider buying a pre-worn wedding gown. Brides only wear their dress once so they usually are in excellent condition. Going this route will also save you money, sometimes up to 50% on top designers.

Try starting your search at Sabrina Ann, a local bridal store in Ardmore that specializes in pre-worn and sample bridal gowns. They carry top name designers such as Melissa Sweet, Vera Wang and Lazaro. You’ll also never have to worry about being on trend; all their gowns are less than 2 years old!

RSVP card by Golden Silhouette

Recycled post consumer waste paper wedding invitation by Golden Silhouette

Go green with paper products. Between invitations, ceremony programs and menu’s, paper can add up. Reduce your waste by having your invites and programs printed on post recycled material, bamboo or cotton paper. Limit the amount of envelopes and inserts when mailing your invites. Instead post any updates and information on your wedding website.

Many stationary companies offer green options so make sure to ask. Golden Silhouette, one of our favorite local stationary companies, has tons of green designs. Most of their designs are made using 30% post consumer waste paper and 20% renewable content created by hydro or wind power. Carryn, the owner also makes sure to use acid free archival links and adhesives.

Clark Park Farmers Market

Hire a caterer committed to using local sustainable food. By serving guests local in season organic food you support local farmers and farmer markets. Philadelphia catering company Peachtree & Ward actively sources it’s products from sustainable farms whenever possible. They also hold community outreach cooking projects where they help prepare meals for people in need. Some catering companies like Birchtree Catering also use 100% biodegradable flatware.

Potted herbs

Potted plants, herbs and flowers all make great centerpiece ideas. Think rosemary, basil and thyme in biodegradable pots. They can also serve as a parting gift for guests to plant in their gardens or put in their windowsill. Try re purposing decorations by moving plants and flowers from the ceremony to the reception so you can enjoy them throughout the day.

Candle centerpiece

Make use of of beeswax or soy candles. Beeswax candles are not only renewable and non-toxic but last longer than petro-based paraffin candles. A cluster creates a romantic setting for guests. I love this wine bottle table; its so dramatic but affordable.

Want some color? Take bright colored potted orchids and wrap the base in a vibrant colored fabric. Cut flowers can still be used when using locally grown and in season blooms. Talk to your florist about getting pesticide free flowers and ask about what types of flowers are in season during your wedding month. A few florists like Hana & Posy even specialize in high quality green floral design.

Another great option if you are using cut flowers is to donate the arrangements to a local nursing home or hospital. So many flowers go to waste after a reception, and letting other people enjoy them is a great way of giving back to the community.

Instead of accepting physical gifts, have your guests donate to a local charity of your choice. Online charity registry sites like the I Do Foundation guide guests through the giving process of your selected charities. Still need some essential newlywed home goods? Not to worry, the site allows you to register at popular stores like Target and Crate & Barrel and than gives up to 5% of your guest’s purchase to your selected charity.

There really are so many ways to be environmentally mindful when planning your wedding. Finding eco-friendly ideas and vendors is simpler than you may think. Blogs like Eco and Elsie offer links to wedding eco-shops from jewelry to decor. With so many fun and easy options, there really is a way for everyone to give back to our environment and have a chic green wedding!

It was a shortly after noon when I arrived at the Arts Ballroom. The weather was surprisingly warm for the first week of October and the sun had just started to peak through the clouds. As I walked into the empty ballroom I was reminded once again just how beautiful the venue is. The crystal chandeliers sparkled above me as I made my way up the grand staircase to the second floor, where I found Tanti and her Papertini floral team already hard at work on Rita’s center pieces. Only a few tables were set by the time Christina and I had to depart for the ceremony, but we knew that upon our return the ballroom would be transformed into a dramatic wonderland.

The extraordinary Pete Malone from 217 Photography was there to capture all the amazing moments throughout the day and he was nice enough to share some of his beautiful photographs.

The day started off with everyone getting ready at the Sheraton Society Hill. The bridal party had a blast getting their hair and makeup done, and Rita’s up-do looked perfect thanks to Natalie from Hair by Natalie. (This iwas one of Natalie’s last weddings as a stylist. We will miss you so much!)

Rita’s romantic bouquet was covered with jewels and handwrapped in a deep brown satin ribbon. She wanted tons of sparkle at her wedding and her bouquet was no exception! Tiny crystals sat in the center of each rose, giving it that extra wow factor.

How amazing are Rita’s shoes! She went for sky high pumps and rocked them all night long.

Their “first look” moment was on a quaint cobblestone alleyway. Pete perfectly captured Chris’s anticipation and excited reaction to his soon to be bride.

Pete took the whole crew throughout society hill for some group pictures. The historic brick houses and streets made for great backdrops.

The intimate ceremony was held at The Headhouse Shambles. Floating candles lined the aisle and the couple said their vows under a archway hanging with orchids and crystals.

Once the ceremony was over, guests boarded a charter bus and made the short ride to The Arts Ballroom for the reception.

Guests were speechless as they stepped into the fairytale ballroom. The gold color of the chiavari chairs accented the orange pin-tucked table linens beautifully.

The center pieces were birch branches dripping in gems and orchids which were placed in tall cylinder vases.

Since the couple’s favorite restaurant is Stephen Starr’s Buddakan, it was only natural that they choose Starr Events to cater their wedding. The food was fabulous and the guests had tons of options for the buffet style dinner (including calamari salad my absolute favorite!) Rita found these adorable Buddha place card holders that guests could take home as favors.

After guests had their fill from dinner it was time to party! The couple’s friends were huge dancers and DJ Matt Blank from Synergetic Sounds kept the dance floor packed all night.

Rita was having so much fun that at one point she took Matt’s headphones and played DJ!

The moment we met Rita and Chris we knew that their wedding was going to be a blast. Rita’s bubbly personality along with Chris’s down to earth attitude is what makes them a perfect match. We couldn’t of been happier to have help them plan their special day.

A big thanks to all the vendors who made the day possible!

Cheers!

Sarah

*Christina’s note: I wanted to chime in here and add my two cents about Rita and Chris’ wedding. From the first instance I met Rita at the little coffee shop near my office, I knew we were going to be a great match. Other wedding professionals asked if Rita was my friend, not client, because we had so much fun together! It was great getting to know Rita and Chris, and also some family and friends that were there along the planning process. This will be a wedding we will always remember, not just because of the fun and crazy guests or the amazing decor, but because of the beautiful couple we were all there to honor. Thank you Rita and Chris for being amazing clients and for being a great friend! *

What side should the guys wear their flowers? Oh boy. If I let the guys put on their own flowers for my weddings, it would not look pretty.

I once had a groomsmen show off his boutonniere to me, and he had somehow wrapped the corsage pin around the stem of the flower and rigged it onto his tux. It looked futuristic, but not in a good way; actually it looked pretty scary!

But I digress!

The boutonniere (the flower guys wear on their tux/suit lapel) should go on the left side. I always think “above the heart,” and is usually placed at the thickest part of the lapel. Some men include a pocket square with their tux; yes, the flower and pocket square are on the same side.

Above is a wire flat boutonniere on our handsome groom Chris (Rita and Chris’ wedding recap to come very soon!) created by our good friend Papertini. She is known for making modern and eccentric boutonnieres, which many of the grooms favor. Also, her pieces use super strong magnets, not pins! So they’re easy for the guys to put on themselves.

If you’re having a traditional boutonniere with a corsage pin, make sure you snake the pin through the back of the lapel. This way the pin does not show in pictures. Most florists will provide pins with black heads, others provide white pins. If you do it correctly, the pin head could be hot pink and it wouldn’t matter because no one would be able to see it. The flower can usually be secured using only one pin, but use a second if the head of the boutonniere is heavy. If the boutonniere is longer (like a calla lily one) you can use the pin vertically, in the back of the lapel. I also use this method if the lapel is thinner, especially in the newer suits.

A video is in the works and I hope to post it soon!

Thanks to 217 Photography for the image!

I was recently presented with opportunity to travel to Spain with a good friend and wow, I am so glad that I did. My one-week adventure in Madrid and later Barcelona was one that I will never forget. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the people, culture and architecture. Not to mention the amazing tapas and wine!

I arrived in Madrid on a brisk but sunny Sunday morning, hoping that I might get a glimpse of a Bride and Groom departing a church. I meandered through small plaza’s ringing with church bells, but to my disappointment, no weddings. However, during the trip I did get to see some beautiful wedding dresses at a international leading bridal group, as well speak to some locals about a few Spanish wedding traditions.

So what exactly is a wedding in Spain like? I decided to do a little research and put together a dream destination wedding in Granada.

Pronovias “Fauna” Dress

In the past, Brides traditionally wore black silk gowns along with black veils. Although, most brides today have accepted the white wedding gown. This beautiful one shoulder gown is from Pronovias Barcelona, a international bridal group that I was fortunate enough to visit while in Barcelona.

Mantilla Veil

One Catholic tradition that has gained popularity not only in Spain but the US is the Mantilla Veil. The lace veils were made popular in the 16th century and typically worn when in presence of the Pope. These beautifully detailed head coverings are perfect for more formal ceremonies. While some are floor length, using a more modern shoulder length can be appropriate for almost any wedding.

In a traditional Roman Catholic wedding ceremony, the bride and groom are married in a church in the evening. A box of gold unity coins called “arras” are brought to the church by the couple and blessed by the residing priest. During the ceremony these coins are exchanged between the couple to symbolize their devotion and commitment to each other.

Parador De Granada Courtyard

Parador’s are historic buildings such as convents, castles and palaces that the Spanish government owns and uses as hotels. These amazingly beautiful and culturally rich sites are perfect for small wedding receptions. Said to be one of the most beautiful is the Parador De Granada. This former convent is actually one of the buildings within The Alhambra, a historic set of palaces, fortresses and small buildings. With a chapel on site, guests can stroll about the numerous gardens after the ceremony before making their way into the enclosed courtyard for a seated dinner.

Photo courtesy of Style Me Pretty

Party the night away under a sea of lights. Guests join the bride and groom to dance the “seguidillas manchegas”, the traditional wedding dance.

Almond Cakes

For desert, almond sponge cakes are a absolute must. Granada is famous for these pastries that were originally made by nuns who brought them to their convents. A few convents still make these treats today.

Photo Courtesy of Style Me Pretty

What is more appropriate than to have guests take home a mini bottle of Andalusian sherry. This sweet desert wine is only grown in select regions of Spain, most famously, Jerez.

Guests don’t have far to go once the festivities come to a end, they simple can walk to their rooms in one of the main buildings of the Parador.

Whether in Spain or right here in Philadelphia, the cHill team loves to plan weddings that incorporate different cultural traditions. Hopefully well get to plan a Spanish soiree soon!

Cheers!

Sarah

I got an email the other day from a maid of honor, who is actually a “co- maid of honor.” Let’s call her MOH1. MOH1 has helped plan some weddings for her other friends, and therefore her BFF has asked her to be an MOH. MOH1 and MOH2 (the other co Maid of Honor) recently went to a venue meeting and a dress shop together and MOH1 thinks MOH2 is crazy! MOH1 is frustrated and thinks the bride should put only one of them in charge. Here is MOH”s question:

Have you ever worked with two maids of honor? and has it ever worked? My friend actually told me that she wanted me in charge because her other friend is drifty and wants to spends tons (where as im organized and thifty). What are your thoughts? I almost want to quit before I start because of this crazy MOH.

Dear MOH1,

Yes, we have worked with two Maids (or Matrons) of Honors before and we have not had any issues. Particularly when having a professional wedding planner, any issues with Bridesmaids are not really “wedding” related, and more issues of jealousy or competition. Because the Bride had cHill Weddings as their planner, the bridesmaids were just sounding boards and really were able to enjoy their time strenghtening their friendships with the Bride and each other.

MOH1, I suggest the following options to you if you want to stay sane and not hurt MOH2 or potentially hurt your relationship with the Bride.

1) Speak with your BFF and ask her what role she sees you playing. If she wants to you be her planner, then offer to be her planner, but you can’t also be a Matron of Honor. A good planner separates her/himself from the wedding party. If she does not want you to be her planner but be a Matron of Honor, then be the supportive friend and just guide her with some of the expertise you have gathered while planning some other weddings, and your own. This also means being a team player and being the bigger person, regardless of how MOH2 acts.

2) Suggest to your BFF to hire a professional wedding planner. This way, it relieves any pressure from you and MOH2 (and any other bridesmaids) and everyone can focus on just being friends and playing nice. Remember, you still have bridal showers and bachelorette parties to plan. Wedding planners don’t usually plan these events, so you may want to focus your energy planning and executing these events with the MOH2 instead of worrying about the wedding as a whole.

Remember, this is the Bride and Groom’s day and no matter what the Bride may tell you, she asked both of you to be her Maid and Matron of Honor because she cares deeply for you both. So be courteous and nice, and offer advice when the Bride asks for it. You two are clearly very different people and that’s okay. Try not to complain too much to the Bride as this will stress her out even more. If the Bride clearly does not want MOH2 to help with any planning, then suggest to her to discuss this with MOH2 directly. Best advice, don’t get involved, or in the end, you will look like the bad guy. Always think in your friend’s interest first, even if it means you have to sit on your hands to prevent slapping someone.

MOH1, I hope this helps! Good luck!

At cHill weddings, we get a lot of requests for service for multicultural, interracial, and same sex weddings. Why? Because we believe everyone should have the right to marry who they love, despite the color of their skin or sexual preference.

So how fitting is it that this couple above, the late Mr. and Mrs. Loving, have really touched our hearts today?

The Daily News reported on a new exhibit at International Center of Photography. Also Mrs. Loving’s documentary will air on February 14 on HBO (be sure to DVR it!). Their love, story, and all they went through is very important to me not only because I myself married a man outside of my “race” but also because they paved the way so that many of our couples can be married today.

I especially loved Mrs. Loving’s comment:

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the “wrong kind of person” for me to marry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry.”

Read more here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2088040/Photographs-Lovings-interracial-marriage-time-banned-16-states.html

I was in Junior High and I was rocking a vintage Banana Republic tshirt - when it was still the safari/rugged style. Only the popular older kids wore these shirts, and I had one. Thanks to Annie! Growing up, Annie, who was a year older than me, handed down to me her clothes and books. I looked up to her because she was older and cooler, like an older sister I never had. We used to have sleepovers at her home, and she introduced me to the old disney sing-a-longs and when we got older, she shared her Adam Sandler “They’re all going to laugh at you” album.

Our parents were very close and I reaped the benefits of having a friend. Once we got to college, we lost touch, especially after my parents moved away, but thanks to Facebook, we reconnected. I learned that she was living abroad and was engaged, and she found my planning website. I took her on as a client and helped her and Barry plan their NJ wedding while they lived in Australia and later Hong Kong.

Annie, a Korean-American girl from New Jersey, was marrying Barry, a Chinese guy from Scotland. They met in Australia and now are living in Hong Kong. Isn’t that crazy?! Love will find you anywhere you go.

Here are some images that depict their wedding date, thanks to Bright Smith Photo (alismith.com and joshuabright.com).

The day started at the Westin in Jersey City. Hair and Makeup was provided by La Sorella Bridal. They were great! They kept all the girls on time and looking radiant.

Usually wedding day mornings are hectic. The girls are rushing to get dressed and the bride is nervous. But Annie’s room was calm and happy. Her bridesmaids were some of the most supportive people I’ve ever seen for a bride and Annie was beaming all day.

The guys got ready at the Westin as well. Here Barry, the groom, is helping Annie’s father with his bow tie. Annie’s dad was an integral part of the wedding planning, very supportive and reiterated many times when I spoke to him that he just wanted Annie and Barry to have a wonderful wedding.

The groomsmen rocked a signature Papertini boutonniere.

And a snapshot of Annie’s bouquet, again courtesy of Papertini. Tanti did an amazing job with her bouquet. It was absolutely stunning and complimented Annie’s dress perfectly.

While the girls were boarding their van to get to the Liberty House, the guys posed for some shots. Looking very dashing!

Annie and Barry had a private moment together before portraits and the wedding. I always encourage this so that you can maximize your time for portraits (while there is still enough light) and also it really calms your nerves.

I really loved Annie’s dress. It was classic and beautiful, but it functional – it had pockets! Annie joked that she can put everyone’s cell phone sand keys in her gown pockets.

All the bridemsaids wore a fusion Korean hanbok. It’s made of the same fabric and patterns of a traditional hanbok, but it was designed to be more like a westernized gown. In this above image, you can sneak peaks of the other colors that hid under the skirt. Gorgeous dresses and a great pay to pay homage to Annie’s Korean background.

The girls carried light blue hydrangeas with pops of purple. Hydrangeas are typically very fragile flowers, especially in the heat, but the amazing Papertini were able to keep them alive and well during her commute from Philadelphia to Jersey City and all day during the wedding.

Annie chose the Liberty House as her wedding venue because she always loved the NYC skyline. The venue had a large platform which was perfect for pictures. I love this picture of them because it shows a bit of their personalities when they’re together.

The ceremony was held outside in a private garden. An arch adorned with flowers was erected as a background. The ceremony was officiated by Annie’s family pastor.

At cocktail hour, we displayed the shadow boxes created by Golden Silhouette. They included pictures of Annie and Barry has children and with their family and friends. Guests loved looking through the three shadow boxes. At the end of the night, we boxed them up so they can display them at their home in Hong Kong.

Although it was very windy, we held the Korean Paebaek ceremony on the platform. I knew Annie loved the skyline, and guests were already outside for the ceremony, so we were able to host the korean ceremony outside. It was tricky, Sarah and I held up the screen, the music was played off the balcony of the venue, and the photographers and videographers took their places on the outskirts of the platform. Guests congregated in front of the platform while they sipped on some cocktails.

The Liberty House has a wonderful outdoor area. Tables had firepits incorporated into the table and people could sit around the pit. It was a great spot for guests to mingle and hang out during cocktail hour.

The main reception was held up in the main ballroom that also over looked the skyline.

The wedding cake was created by the famous Cake Boss! Unfortunately I never got a chance to taste the cake. I was too busy catching fire… more on that later.

All paper pieces were done by Golden Silhouette and florals designed and created by Papertini. All the tables were named after places that Annie and Barry have visited or lived in. For such a well traveled couple, they had plenty of locations left over after we assigned the tables.

*Both mosaic images provided by Carryn Golden of Golden Silhouette.

Here are some details shots!

Each place setting had Scottish Shortbread and Chinese Happiness candies to commemorate Barry’s background (Chinese-Scottish).

The wedding was a blast! Annie and Barry were such gracious hosts of their wedding, welcoming friends and family from all over the globe! I think there were more guests from overseas than from the US.

Planning their wedding was a great experience and I was so blessed to get to know Annie all over again and to get to know her wonderful husband. My night was totally made when Barry gave a speech and thanked me and Tanti (of Papertini)!

The wedding went off without a hitch, and cHill Weddings was on fire! Literally. I leaned over the head table to speak with Barry and I didn’t realize that one of the votive’s flames had caught fire onto my blazer. Yeah, I was on fire. It was awesome.

Thank you Annie and Barry for including us in your beautiful wedding day! It was an honor to work with you both and I hope we see each other again real soon!

A few months ago, I volunteered to be a model for a photography workshop which was being held at Cindy Guessford’s studio in NJ.

When I got to the studio, I was surprised by Cindy with a mini portrait session, in addition to hair and makeup!

Here’s Andre (of Andre Richard Salon in Philadelphia) fixing my hair. It was SO awesome to have someone making sure I looked good during the entire shoot).

I will share with you all later the images from the workshop, but first I wanted to show you some images from Cindy from our mini beloved session:

What is a beloved session? A quick description (in my words): it’s a portrait session where the images are taken while the photo subject is in mid action or thought which are triggered by statements and questions by the photographer. Because of this, the images are pictures of me not being posed so much, but of what I’m thinking or doing.

I think here I was being a ham and dancing or something silly. This is how I am usually when I am not working.

I don’t want to give too much away, so the best way to find out more about Beloved is to get a session done yourself! Everyone I know who shoot beloved sessions or have been a part of a session love it and describe it as an amazing experience.

Here’s a sneak peek of the other photo shoot/workshop I was a part of!

All images courtesy of the super mega star crazy talented Cindy Guessford. Special thanks to Cindy for surprising me with this session. It made me feel so beautiful and carefree which is just what I needed after my health scare and a stressful Spring/Summer season.

It seems to be a tradition. Every year, on May 22nd, we are working a wedding at Appleford. Last year, Tasha worked with Jasmine, and this year, we got to [...]

It seems to be a tradition. Every year, on May 22nd, we are working a wedding at Appleford. Last year, Tasha worked with Jasmine, and this year, we got to work with Tonya! This wedding was very special to us because she found us through her friend, Angela. It was great to see so many familar faces at Tonya and Peter’s wedding!

Tonya was looking for a coordinator because she had so many great ideas but needed help executing them. From tissue paper pom poms to krispy kreme donuts, a blue vintage desk, and fun lawn games, it was important to her that these all be set up. The Appleford Estate is beautiful as is, but with the pops of color she chose, it really livened up the venue. Through various set ups throughout the space, guests really had the opportunity to explore the grounds and take in the beauty of the venue.

We first started off on the side lawn overlooking a tiny stream. One of Tonya’s background was Indian, so she had Margaux of Fleur De Lis create a birch tree interpretation of the mandap. VIPs (such as immediate family) sat in the front, next to the mandap.

Tonya and Peter are members of the Episcopalian church in Philadelphia, so the pastor from The Church of the Holy Trinity, Rev. Neale, officiated.

Before the ceremony started however, they kicked off the party right, with some donuts and beverages, like french pressed coffee.

Don’t those glazed donuts look divine? I’m proud to say I did not cave and eat any!

Tonya created color programs – in torquise and purple.

Yes, that is a gold heat embossed stamp that was hand stamped by the bride!

After the ceremony, guests were escorted up through the rose garden where they were greeted by a beautiful vintage table that was painted and repurposed by Tonya’s best friend.

On the table, family wedding photos were displayed along with their wedding witness signatures.

After guests signed, they were invited to some lawn games, or chess in the side balcony, or to just walk around and enjoy pictures of their friends and family and their beautiful dogs.

I thought this was a great representation of the full times of their wedding:

The brunch was actually a seated tasting menu, prepared by Peach Tree and Ward.

Beautiful table scape! I love that the couple was not afraid of color, and this was a beautiful color scheme.

Their cake, provided by Tartes Bakery, was so adorable. I gingerly placed those cute birdies on the cakes. Phew! But totally worth it; how adorable!

and here are some more details and pics of the newlyweds!

This was one of my favorite details. Liz was a good friend of the couple, who had recently passed away after battling breast cancer. I actually remember her from Angela and Matt’s wedding. In her memory, they had a table where guests can take some cool gifts in rememberance of Liz. You can learn more here: http://ww5.komen.org/

In the background of the picture above, you can see some pillows that Tonya’s friend made! He also made large window seat cushions too. Super comfy and added great pops of color!

I loved all the bridesmaids dresses. I am a fan of same color but different dresses. It add a little something chic to the wedding, and also the girls are much more comfortable in dresses they find that would fit their bodies best. I thought these ladies looked stunning!

Tonya and Peter ended their Sunday brunch wedding by being sent off by their friends and family as they rolled away in a handsome Rolls Royce.
